Job Description
Position: School Climate, Culture, and Safety Specialist
Reports to: Principal
Terms of Employment: 10 months
Pay Grade: NC State Salary Schedule (commensurate with experience), plus local supplement
FLSA Status: Exempt
Nature of Work
The Climate, Culture, and Safety Specialist will create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. To oversee the implementation of MTSS (behavior and social-emotional), including PBIS, Restorative Practices, and behavioral management, including ISS. In addition, the Climate, Culture, and Safety Specialist will oversee the school's safety plan.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
- Master’s degree in Counseling (preferred)
- Experience working in a K-12 Public School environment (preferred)

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
- Works closely with the building principal, assistant principal, school leadership team, and counselors to implement the plan for climate and culture.
- Along with the Principal, establishes an integrated system of intervention (known by all school staff) that promotes health development and prevents problems
- Responds to problems as early as feasible (engaging in reflective analysis to identify and solve problems associated with student achievement and development),
- Regularly surveys students, staff, parents, and community members regarding school climate to assess success and areas of improvement.
- Creates opportunities for staff members to participate in professional learning communities (PLC) specific to climate and culture.
- Evaluates school policies to determine if they are supportive of a comprehensive system that encourages students to be engaged (feeling a sense of belonging, connectedness, and competency)
- Use the school’s culture surveys to improve efforts as a method to coordinate academic, behavioral, and home and community support.
- Works collaboratively with the principal, assistant principal, and counselors to analyze all monthly suspension, discipline, and attendance data, documenting specific trends and recommendations for improvement.
- Schedule support for teachers through modeling behavior interventions, mentoring, and coaching teaching staff.
- Working with teachers to design learning environments conducive to students’ diverse needs.
- Accesses classrooms to gather data on best practices for culture and climate trends.
- Works collaboratively with staff to develop a strategic implementation plan for improving climate and culture.
- Provides professional development to families designed to increase their skill level in developing students' academic, social, and emotional supports for students.
- Oversee the school safety plan.
- Observes students in the classroom learning environment and other areas of the school to design effective support systems.
- Serves as a member of the school MTSS Problem-Solving Team
- Participates in School Improvement Team meetings

- Involves other school staff in making decisions about school climate, culture and safety.
- Work with community stakeholders in improving school climate, culture and safety.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Duties performed typically in school settings include classrooms, gyms, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hand, and talk or hear; light lifting up to 40 pounds and other limited physical activities are required.
